Rationale

This science course aims to enable students to develop specialised knowledge and skills for professional practice and further learning consistent with the requirements of the Australian Qualifications Framework. On completion of this course students are expected to demonstrate a professional level of scholarship and have gained expert, specialised cognitive and technical skills in a body of scientific knowledge or practice to independently analyse critically, reflect on and synthesise complex information, problems, concepts and theories.

Synopsis

This course provides the opportunity for a student to pursue an area of study in science that will complement the other program studies. Typically the course will consist of specialised investigations extending knowledge and skills in a certain area. The area of study chosen will be assigned after consultation with the examiner and a staff member with expertise in the area concerned. On completion of this course students are expected to have gained expert, specialised cognitive and technical skills in a body of knowledge or practice to independently analyse critically, reflect on and synthesise complex information, problems, concepts and theories. Assessment will be via an essay.

    The study area chosen will be assigned after consultation with the examiner and the appropriate Program Coordinator. It is the student's responsibility to find a staff member willing to supervise their study and to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration.

  2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:

Assessment notes

  1. The supervisor will advise the student and the examiner of the details of the study and the assessment program in writing by the end of week 3 of the semester as in TOPICS above.

  2. Assessment for the course will also vary according to the nature of the study undertaken by each student. By the end of the third week of semester the supervisor will provide the examiner with: (i) an outline of the study (ii) the objectives of the study (iii) the format, timing and weighting of the assessment items for the study (iv) a statement about attendance requirements (v) requirements of students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily (vi) penalties for late submission of required work (vii) requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course (viii) the method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade (ix) examination information (x) examination period when Deferred/Supplementary examinations will be held (xi) any other requirements deemed necessary by the examiner.
