Rationale

All students entering tertiary study require an opportunity to master and hence be confident with basic mathematics embedded within their discipline studies. Students undertaking undergraduate degrees that do not specifically recommend mathematics, for example Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Communication and Media, Bachelor of Laws, Bachelor of General Studies and Bachelor of Human Services, should be able to interpret the mathematics that they encounter in a wide range of media. This course therefore focuses on building the mathematical literacy of students intending to enrol in such degrees. It also provides foundational material for further studies in the pre-tertiary courses in mathematics.

Synopsis

Using concepts of self-paced instruction and adult learning the course guides students through a carefully sequenced series of topics that develop the mathematical literacy necessary for study in those undergraduate degrees that do not specifically require mathematics. Each module in the course uses applications of mathematical literacy to develop foundational mathematical content. The self-paced structure allows students to work at their own pace within a specified framework, thus developing their confidence with mathematics, mathematical communication and general problem solving skills.

Objectives

On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of a number of mathematical concepts essential for tertiary study and further pre-tertiary study, detailed below;
  2. Interpret and solve a range of problems involving relevant mathematical concepts;
  3. Demonstrate the skills and understanding necessary to extend mathematical knowledge into everyday life and other studies;
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of personal learning strategies used in the study of mathematics;
  5. Demonstrate an ability to manage their learning of mathematics;
  6. Effectively interpret and communicate mathematics within a range of contexts.

Important assessment information

  1. Attendance requirements:
    There are no attendance requirements for this course. However, it is the students' responsibility to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration.
    A two hour group learning session will be provided in each teaching week of the semester for on-campus students. Attendance at these sessions, and participation in the sessions, will not be used in determining any final grade in the course.

  2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:

    Students should refer to the Assessment Procedure (point 4.2.4)

  4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
    Due to COVID-19 the requirements for S2 2020 are: To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must achieve at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course.

    Requirements after S2 2020:
    To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must obtain at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course (i.e. the Primary Hurdle), and have satisfied the Secondary Hurdle (Supervised), i.e. the end of semester examination by achieving at least 40% of the weighted marks available for that assessment item.

    Supplementary assessment may be offered where a student has undertaken all of the required summative assessment items and has passed the Primary Hurdle but failed to satisfy the Secondary Hurdle (Supervised), or has satisfied the Secondary Hurdle (Supervised) but failed to achieve a passing Final Grade by 5% or less of the total weighted Marks.

    To be awarded a passing grade for a supplementary assessment item (if applicable), a student must achieve at least 50% of the available marks for the supplementary assessment item as per the Assessment Procedure (point 4.4.2).

  5. Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
    The final passing grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the weighted aggregate of the marks obtained for each of the summative items for the course.

  6. Examination information:
    Due to COVID-19 the requirements for S2 2020 are: An Open Examination is one in which candidates may have access to any printed or written material and a calculator during the examination.

    Requirements after S2 2020:
    RESTRICTED: Candidates are allowed access only to specific materials during the examination. The only materials that candidates may use in the restricted examination for this course are:
    i. writing materials (non-electronic and free from material which could give the student an unfair advantage in the examination)
    ii. scientific calculators (non-graphical and non-programmable)
    iii. one A4 page of hand written or typed notes (written on both sides)
    iv. English translation dictionaries (but not technical dictionaries)

  7. Examination period when Deferred/Supplementary examinations will be held:

Assessment notes

  1. If electronic submission is specified for a course assessment, students will be notified of this on the Course 精东传媒app Desk. The due date for an electronically submitted assessment is the date by which a student must electronically submit the assignment irrespective of holidays. The assignment files must be submitted by 11.55pm on the due date using USQ time (as displayed on the clock on the course home page; that is, Australian Eastern Standard Time).

  2. If hardcopy submission is specified for a course assessment students will be notified of this on the Course 精东传媒app Desk. The due date for a hardcopy assignment is the date by which a student must submit at USQ or despatch the assignment to USQ, irrespective of holidays.

  3. Students must retain a copy of each item submitted for assessment. This must be produced within 5 days if required by the Examiner.
