Rationale
Students entering tertiary study require an opportunity to master, practise and refine mathematical skills as prerequisites for successful study. This course will provide students with the mathematics essential for tertiary studies in Bachelor of Business and Commerce; Bachelor of Information Technology; Bachelor of Education; Bachelor of Nursing (Pre-Registration); Bachelor of Paramedicine; Bachelor of Sport and Exercise and the Bachelor of Science (Biology, Computing, Psychology, Psychology and Human Physiology and Information Technology). It also provides foundational material for further studies in pre-tertiary courses in mathematics and physics.
Synopsis
After reviewing fundamental arithmetic principles, the course introduces proportional reasoning and develops this through a number of topics before introducing generalised mathematical thinking and basic algebra. The self-paced instruction allows students to develop confidence with mathematics, mathematical communication and general problem solving and provides students with the foundation skills to enable them to engage with the mathematical concepts encountered in the tertiary studies detailed above.
Objectives
On completion of this course students will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of a number of mathematical topics essential for tertiary study, detailed below;
- Interpret and solve a range of problems involving mathematical concepts relevant to this course;
- Demonstrate the skills and understanding necessary to extend mathematical knowledge into everyday life and other studies;
- Effectively interpret and communicate mathematics within a range of concepts;
- Demonstrate an understanding of personal learning strategies used in the study of mathematics;
- Demonstrate an ability to manage, and reflect on, their learning of the mathematics in this course.

Attendance requirements:
There are no attendance requirements for this course. A two hour group learning session will be provided in each teaching week of the semester for on-campus students. Attendance at these sessions, and participation in the sessions, will not be used in determining any final grade in the course. However, it is the students responsibility to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration. -
Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
Students are not required to complete every assessment item to a satisfactory standard in order to obtain a passing grade for the course. -

Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
Due to COVID-19 the requirements for S1 2020 are: To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must achieve at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course.
Requirements after S1 2020:
To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must obtain at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course (i.e. the Primary Hurdle), and have satisfied the Secondary Hurdle (Supervised), i.e. the end of semester examination by achieving at least 40% of the weighted marks available for that assessment item.
Supplementary assessment may be offered where a student has undertaken all of the required summative assessment items and has passed the Primary Hurdle but failed to satisfy the Secondary Hurdle (Supervised), or has satisfied the Secondary Hurdle (Supervised) but failed to achieve a passing Final Grade by 5% or less of the total weighted Marks.
To be awarded a passing grade for a supplementary assessment item (if applicable), a student must achieve at least 50% of the available marks for the supplementary assessment item as per the Assessment Procedure (point 4.4.2). -
Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
The final passing grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the weighted aggregate of the marks obtained for each of the summative assessment items in the course. -
Examination information:
Due to COVID-19 the requirements for S1 2020 are: An Open Examination is one in which candidates may have access to any printed or written material and a calculator during the examination.
Requirements after S1 2020:
Examinations in this course are restricted examinations. In a Restricted Examination, candidates are allowed access to specific materials during the examination. The only materials that candidates may use in the restricted examination for this course are:
i. writing materials (non-electronic and free from material which could give the student an unfair advantage in the examination);
ii. scientific calculators (non graphical and non-programmable);
iii. 1 A4 page of hand written or typed notes (written on both sides);
iv. English translation dictionaries (but not technical dictionaries). -

OAC will normally only accept assessments that have been written, typed or printed on paper-based media.

Students must retain a copy of each item submitted for assessment. This must be produced within five days if required by the Examiner.
