Overview
As students undertaking UniPrep come from diverse backgrounds this course provides an introduction to the culture and practices of a university community. The course focuses on developing the skills, knowledge and attributes required to engage effectively with university systems, discourses, policies and processes, and to self-manage learning in a university context. This course also supports students to develop the communicative competencies required to actively participate in higher education. The course aims to prepare students for transition from a school to a university environment. This course contains a mandatory residential school.
Students will progress through a course which requires them to explore and respond to aspects of the university community relevant to their role as new students. They will investigate issues relevant to the context of higher education, engage in career development and planning and undertake tasks related to self-management, including goal setting, time management and planning. Learning in this course will focus on participation in practical, authentic activities relevant to beginning university study.
Course learning outcomes
On successful completion of this course students should be able to:
- Engage successfully with university systems, processes, discourses, policies and practices relevant to first year study.
- Apply skills, knowledge and attributes necessary to self-manage in an academic community.
- Correctly use a wide range of textual features in a range of communication modes and genres.
- Use basic mathematics skills and knowledge required as a foundation to succeed in a university environment.
