Overview

The collation, analysis and interpretation of diagnostics and assessment data of a client's health status are fundamental to autonomous and collaborative health care within a specific context. Advanced practice nursing utilises extended and expanded skills, experience and knowledge in the assessment, planning, implementation, diagnosis and evaluation of the care required. This course prepares registered nurses to make informed and judicious decisions about the use of specific diagnostic tools, the synthesis of assessment data and appropriate therapeutic responses to health care needs.

This course introduces the registered nurse to the advanced nursing praxis of correlation of assessment data, diagnostic testing and evidence based management to determine a differential diagnoses related to scheduled medicine administration. Students will apply evidence based practice to the skills of physical assessment and interpretation of health data and status, to validate the appropriate protocol for administration of scheduled medicines.

Course learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  1. Evaluate Review and analyse cultural safety in relation to health assessment, diagnostics and scheduled medicines;
  2. Perform a comprehensive health assessment and document the findings;
  3. Analyse and interpret patient assessment and diagnostic data to select /provide appropriate interventions within legislative and professional frameworks;
  4. Identify the availability of diagnostic procedures and their application to establishing health status within a context of practice;
  5. Use inter-professional communication to facilitate the management of scheduled medicines;
  6. Critically analyse the impact of altered health status on the individual, family and community.

1. Advanced Health Assessment – this module covers comprehensive health history and physical examination, focussed assessment, psychosocial and cultural/spiritual history, family medical history, prescribed and over the counter medications, documentation and collaborative communication. 40.00
2. Foundations in diagnostics - this module will guide and expand the student’s ability to use clinical evidence and nurse initiated diagnostics to develop a differential diagnostic framework for patient care. 40.00
