Overview
The design and construction of roads impacts on almost all sectors of society. The design of a safe and efficient road network requires an understanding of the planning systems, environmental issues, driver characteristics, traffic profiles and many other factors. The course introduces students to the concept of road location with particular emphasis on the design of the geometric elements of the road including horizontal and vertical alignments. The design will be examined from the context of rural road design, however some application to urban roads will be examined. Theory will be supported using computer aided design and modelling packages.
Course learning outcomes
The course objectives define the student learning outcomes for a course. On completion of this course, students should be able to:
- recognise the importance of the planning process in the design of roads;
- apply basic design parameters and relevant geometric principles to the preliminary design of urban and rural roads;
- explain and apply process of horizontal and vertical road alignment for rural and urban road design;
- differentiate the different design parameters as applied to urban vs rural roads;
- integration of design elements incorporating standard road alignment calculations
