Overview

Slow-onset climate change and extreme weather events continue to manifest in multi-faceted and complex ways. These impacts place further strain on natural ecosystems and built environments, both of which can result in serious consequences for human populations. In this course, students review the science of climate change, and the intersections between climate and human health, before studying risk, exposure, and impact pathways contextualized within a planetary health framework.

The course is contextualised within a planetary health framework. Students will gain knowledge of the variability of the climate system and the potential exposure pathways that lead to human health impacts. Global and local hazards, impacts and response strategies are studied.

Course learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course students will have:

  1. Apply an understanding of planetary health, and its relevance to climate change and human health
  2. Analyse and assess climate change impacts on human health and how these impacts can be addressed
  3. Interpret relevant epidemiological and climate hazard data, and assess potential impacts for human populations
  4. Reflect upon the role of risk and exposure assessments, health risk communication and management strategies in the context of climate change and planetary health
  5. Analyse through case study examples how climate change unevenly impacts global, and Australian populations.
