Program aims

The Master of Project Management and Master of Business Administration (MBAP) encapsulates the aims of each program. The Master of Project Management aims to produce graduates who have appropriate skills and knowledge to be capable of managing small, medium and large-sized projects as either a senior team leader, a project manager or project director. The Master of Business Administration is an advanced academic program for graduates from any discipline who have considerable business experience, and who have a recognised potential for advanced managerial responsibility. This program focuses on those areas of modern management that develop judgement, skills and attitudes that are essential to managerial responsibility.

Program objectives

The Master of Project Management aims to produce graduates who are able to:

• demonstrate underlying knowledge of the theoretical structure of project management as defined by the Project Management Body of Knowledge

• demonstrate essential skills in relation to identification and analysis of logistics management, and integrate logistics management into the overall operation of the organisation

• apply the theoretical principles of project management to a project environment in relation to project:

  • scheduling and time management

  • cost management

  • quality management

  • human resources management

  • communications management

  • risk management

  • procurement management

  • integration management

  • scope management

  
  

• apply management skills acquired through elective courses in the context of project management.

The Master of Business Administration will enhance student analytical skills related to management, people, markets, finance, and technical knowledge. Graduates will be able to solve complex organisational problems and be able to manage change through the mastery of particular skills related to creativity, information literacy, and self-reflection. The program focuses on how to demonstrate leadership in global sustainability and how to understand the nature of ethical decisions across contemporary business practice. The MBA program will enable graduates to work in virtual and non-traditional work environments and increase personal mastery in oral and written communication.

The objectives of the program are to produce graduates who are able to:

• demonstrate understanding of the basic theories and skills of modern management discipline areas

• display competence in a wide range of areas relevant to management practice at senior levels

• apply their knowledge of current behavioural, policy and strategic issues so as to improve organisational efficiency

• use well-developed communication skills to interact effectively with other people at a superior and lower work level

• comprehend, analyse and evaluate internal and external environmental forces, and develop strategic plans for the management of change

• demonstrate a thorough understanding of the relevant political, cultural and business environments, and of ethical standards in modern business

• analyse developments in a chosen area of management, and to critically evaluate the relationships between such developments and contemporary theory and practice

• further enhance their managerial skills through a commitment to ongoing managerial development.

Admission requirements

Candidates for entry into the Master of Project Management and Master of Business Administration must meet each of the following criteria:

• a tertiary qualification at degree or equivalent level from a recognised institution as deemed sufficient and appropriate on application

• a minimum of three years' full-time equivalent work experience as deemed sufficient and appropriate on application.

Candidates who do not have a degree will be permitted to enrol in the Postgraduate Certificate of Business (Business Foundation) or the Postgraduate Certificate of Business (Project Management), provided that they have a minimum of three years' full-time equivalent work experience, which includes relevant experience as deemed sufficient and appropriate on application. Upon completion and achievement of a minimum GPA of 4.0, they will be eligible to articulate into the double-degree program.

Candidates who have a degree but do not have a minimum of three years' full-time relevant professional work experience will be permitted to enrol in the Postgraduate Certificate of Business (Early Career) only. Upon completion and achievement of a minimum GPA of 4.0, they will be eligible for entry into the double-degree program.

Domestic and International Applicants from a non-English speaking background are required to satisfy .

Program structure

The Master of Project Management and Master of Business Administration double degree is made up of 14 courses:

• 8 Master of Business Administration core courses

• 3 Master of Project Management (ends 2014) core courses

• the capstone course

• 2 elective courses.

Students must complete two elective courses. These courses must be 5000 or 8000 level courses which may be chosen from any Business and Commerce coursework Masters program. It is recommended that students confirm their choice of elective courses with the Faculty of Business, Education, Law and Arts.

Students who complete the Master of Business Administration component are eligible to apply for the Doctor of Business Administration, provided that they meet all of the admission requirements for that program. Please refer to the Doctor of Business Administration entry in this Handbook for further information, or contact the Faculty of Business, Education, Law and Arts.

Exit points

A student who chooses not to complete or who does not maintain good standing in this program will be permitted to exit with a lesser qualification as set out below, provided that they have met the requirements of that program. This means:

• A student who successfully completes all twelve courses for the Master of Business Administration, may upon application exit with that degree. A student who has successfully completed all the requirements of at least one specialisation may have one specialisation shown on their testamur.

• A student who successfully completes all eight courses for the Master of Project Management (ends 2014), may upon application exit with that degree. A student who has successfully completed all the requirements of at least one specialisation may have one specialisation shown on their testamur.

• A student who successfully completes eight units may, upon application, exit with a Postgraduate Diploma of Business. A student who has successfully completed all the requirements of at least one specialisation may have one specialisation shown on their testamur.

• A student who successfully completes all requirements for the Postgraduate Certificate of Business may, upon application, exit with that qualification. A student who has successfully completed all the requirements of a four-unit specialisation may have that specialisation shown on their testamur.

Credit

A double degree is required to meet the requirements of each degree studied with a maximum of 50% units of credit for each program studied individually.

This double degree meets the requirements of the eight-unit Master of Project Management (ends 2014) and the 12-unit Master of Business Administration. The two programs together require the completion of 20 units, including the possibility of up to 10 units of credit with up to four units of credit from the Master of Project Management (ends 2014) and six from the Master of Business Administration. The structure of this double degree, has been designed to include the cross allocation of six units of credit leaving students the possibility of a further four units of credit.

Credit may be granted on the basis of completed equivalent postgraduate or undergraduate study from a recognised university. In order for credit to be granted, the claim must meet the following specific requirements:

• the course was passed within five years prior to the application (courses up to 10 years old may be considered if evidence is provided that the applicant has been employed in that field)

• the course passed is equivalent in objectives, content and weightings to a course prescribed in the Master of Business Administration program, or alternatively, the course is suitable as an elective

• the maximum granted is no greater than six units of credit for the Master of Business Administration

• the maximum granted is no greater than four units of credit for the Master of Project Management (ends 2014)

• credit approved in this program will not automatically apply to other programs offered by USQ

• the maximum that will be considered on the basis of undergraduate study is four units of credit.
