Overview

  • The Water Science major is an integration of water dynamics, surface processes, climate and resource utilisation and management, with a focus on Australia’s unique inland river, floodplain and groundwater systems.
  • Within this practical and industry-orientated major you will explore different aspects of water science and hydrological modelling.
  • UniSQ is at the forefront of water modelling as part of water science and engineering, working closely with the Queensland Government, consulting firms, groups and the .
  • Explore and expand your knowledge with field studies of water resources and freshwater ecosystems, survey and monitoring techniques, data analysis, and site visits to water resource and renewable energy facilities.

Further study

Graduates may choose to undertake further study in environmental science (e.g. Bachelor of Science (Honours), Master of Science, or PhD) in collaboration with one of our closely aligned research centres: Centre for Applied Climate Sciences and Centre for Sustainable Agricultural Systems.

Career outcomes

  • Graduates may find work as hydrologist, water scientists, water modeller, or choose to work as Science Teachers (with further study) or Science Journalists.
  • Graduates may work for consulting firms, resources/mining industries, national parks, universities, defence organisations, , State and Federal Government departments, and other organisations contributing to sustainable utilisation and management of our water resources.

Pre-requisites

To study this degree we assume you have sound knowledge in:

  • English (Units 3 & 4, C) 

We assume that your knowledge is equivalent to a grade C or higher in Units 3 and 4 at high school level (typically studied in Year 12). Find out more about assumed knowledge.

  • Subject pre-requisite: General Mathematics (Units 3 & 4, C) or equivalent.
  • Recommended prior study: Mathematical Methods (Units 3 & 4, C) and one of Biology, Chemistry or Physics (Units 3 & 4, C), or equivalent. If students do not have the recommended Mathematical Methods level for entry then they will be required to undertake MAT1000 Mathematics Fundamentals as an elective.

Special entry schemes for admissions may increase your Rank, through the allocation of additional points in certain circumstances, such as educational disadvantage where you live, and subjects you passed.

English language requirements

You are required to meet the applicable English language requirements and this degree requires a minimum of IELTS 6.0 with a minimum 5.5 in each subscore. UniSQ also accepts other English language proficiency tests.

Recognition of prior learning or work experience

You may be eligible for recognition of prior learning if you have previously studied or have relevant work experience. This will help to reduce the number of courses that you need to study to finish your program.

Residential schools

All students will have the opportunity to come on-campus for residential schools, where you will attend face-to-face lectures and tutorials to gain practical experience, use facilities and specialist equipment, and meet staff and other students.

Some courses within this degree contain residential schools:

  • WAT1101 Introduction to Water Science: you will be required to attend a Highly Recommended residential school consisting of a one day excursion to sites within the Toowoomba/Darling Downs region
  • WAT2202 Catchment & Water Resources Management: you will be required to attend a Highly Recommended residential school consisting of a two day excursion to sites within the Toowoomba/Darling Downs region.
