Professional accreditation

Graduates of the Bachelor of Aviation (Flight Operations) program will gain professional pilot qualifications issued by the Australian .

There is no external professional accreditation required for graduates of the Bachelor of Aviation (Aviation Management). However, UniSQ is fully engaged with professional aviation organisations that will help shape and periodically review the standards expected of graduates.

Program aims

The Bachelor of Aviation is a professional program that aims to provide an in-depth understanding of the principles and concepts of the aviation system, its components, aircraft operations, and support and enabling processes. In addition, the program aims to equip graduates with a broad and coherent understanding of human performance issues within the aviation system. Graduates in the Flight Operations major will be provided with the requisite flying skills and knowledge to meet the requirements of the Australian Commercial Pilot Licence.

Program objectives

Program objectives are to:

  • develop a broad and coherent body of knowledge of the aviation industry with depth in the underlying principles and concepts as a basis for independent lifelong learning

  • build initiative and judgement in planning, problem solving and decision making in a professional aviation context

  • exercise cognitive and practical skills and the ability to exercise critical thinking and judgement in practical situations

  • develop written and interpersonal communication skills appropriate to the complex socio-technical aviation system

  • develop and apply a range of research skills to maintain professional currency in the aviation industry and/or theoretical research methodologies appropriate to the aviation context

  • act as responsible, ethical professionals based on respect for diversity of cultures and peoples, both locally and globally

Australian Qualifications Framework

The Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) is a single national, comprehensive system of qualifications offered by higher education institutions (including universities), vocational education and training institutions and secondary schools. Each AQF qualification has a set of descriptors which define the type and complexity of knowledge, skills and application of knowledge and skills that a graduate who has been awarded that qualification has attained, and the typical volume of learning associated with that qualification type.

This program is at AQF Qualification Level 07. Graduates at this level will have broad and coherent knowledge and skills for professional work and/or further learning.

Admission requirements

To be eligible for admission, applicants must satisfy the following requirements:

  • Have achieved a minimum Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) of 62.7, or equivalent qualification.^
  • English Language Proficiency requirements for Category 2.


Applicants are advised to also address the following:

  • expectations: English (Units 3 & 4, C) and General Mathematics (Units 3 & 4, C).


Although not an admission requirement to the program, students planning to undertake the Flight Operations major will have to hold a Class 1 Medical Certificate issued by the , as this is one of the regulatory requirements to hold a Commercial Pilot Licence.

It is highly recommended that students investigate their ability to hold an Aviation Security Identification Card (ASIC) and/or pass all required security checks as some organisations such as airports require employees to satisfy security clearances as a condition of employment. Please note: Students intending to undertake the Flight Operations major will be required to co-enrol with a specified flight training school. In addition, when undertaking flight training, students are required to enrol in AVN3500 Flight Operations Professional Practice (as specified in the Recommended Enrolment Pattern section. Please contact UniSQ for further information on the application process.

All students are required to satisfy the applicable .

If students do not meet the English language requirements they may apply to study a ¾«¶«´«Ã½app-approved . On successful completion of the English language program, students may be admitted to an award program.

These are determined by the ¾«¶«´«Ã½app for specific programs each Semester. The 2023 ATAR and tertiary entrance ranks are based on agreed QTAC schedules which assess formal study at Year 12 or , tertiary, preparatory, professional or vocational qualifications or work experience, as detailed in the QTAC Assessment of Qualifications Manual and QTAC Assessor Guidelines.

Commonwealth supported place

A Commonwealth supported place is where the Australian Government makes a contribution towards the cost of a students' higher education and students pay a , which varies depending on the courses undertaken. Students are able to calculate the fees for a particular course via the .

Domestic full fee paying place

Australian citizens, Permanent Humanitarian Visa holders, Permanent Resident visa holders and New Zealand citizens who will be resident outside Australia for the duration of their program pay full tuition fees and are not eligible for .

Flight Operations major

Although not an admission requirement to the program, students planning to undertake the Flight Operations major will have to hold a Class 1 Medical Certificate issued by the , as this is one of the regulatory requirements to hold a Commercial Pilot Licence.

Minor Studies

A minor study is a coherent group of four units of courses that provides students with an appropriate breadth of study in their program. All students, except those undertaking a second major, must complete a 4-unit minor study. Students who wish to take a minor study not listed in the recommended minors must obtain permission from the Faculty of Business, Education, Law and Arts. Before undertaking any course, the pre-requisite courses must be completed or exempted.

Please note: When students select a minor(s), courses will only count towards that minor(s) if they have not already counted towards another selected major or minor. Not all minors are available on-campus at all campuses. Students may choose courses from those listed in the Minor Studies section of this Handbook. Enrolment requirements must be satisfied for any course selected.

Electives/Approved courses

Students that were admitted to the Bachelor of Aviation Program prior to 2023 will be required to obtain approval from the Bachelor of Aviation Program Director before enrolling in elective courses.

It is recommended that students enrolled in the Aviation Management major commencing in 2023 discuss their plans to enrol in a minor or student selective courses with the Program Director (usq.support@usq.edu.au) to enhance employability outcomes.

While this is not an admission requirement to the program, students planning to undertake the Flight Operations major are encouraged to ensure they are able hold a Class 1 Medical Certificate issued by the , as this is one of the regulatory requirements to hold a Commercial Pilot Licence.

Exit points

Students not wishing to complete the Bachelor of Aviation may be permitted to exit with the Associate Degree of Aviation (ADAV).

Students may exit with the Associate Degree of Aviation (ADAV) if they have completed 16 first and second year courses as follows:

  • 8 core courses

  • 8 courses from the Aviation Management major or the Flight Operations major.

Credit

Candidates for admission to the Bachelor of Aviation may be eligible for up to 16 units of credit on the basis of successful completion of relevant, equivalent undergraduate study from a recognised university or institution offering equivalent study.

For the applicable VET registered diplomas (or equivalent), the ¾«¶«´«Ã½app will grant eight units of block credit for the third year of the Bachelor of Aviation (Flight Operations major):

The applicable VET registered diplomas are:

  • AVI50222 – Diploma in Aviation (Commercial Pilot Licence – Aeroplane)# (previously AVI50219)

  • AVI50319 – Diploma in Aviation (Commercial Pilot Licence – Helicopter)#


Applicants with Military and/or International equivalents to these qualifications will be considered on an individual basis.

From 1 January 2017, the Federal Government replaced the VET FEE-HELP Scheme with the VET Student Loans scheme. The Diploma of Aviation - required for Bachelor of Aviation (Flight Operations major) - offered by qualified Flight Schools is recognised for the new scheme. A VET Student loans from the Government can provide the latest information. If needed please or discuss directly with your proposed aviation registered training organisation (Flight School).

Credit approved in this program will not automatically apply to other programs offered by UniSQ.

Claims for credit for previous study should be submitted prior to or at the time of enrolment. Each claim will be assessed on individual merit in line with UniSQ policy.

Note: Where credit is granted, maximum and minimum duration will be adjusted in the same proportion as credit.

Recommended enrolment patterns

Given the program structure information, students should plan their enrolment making sure that they have fulfilled all core, major and elective requirements. Enrolment requirements must be satisfied before enrolling in a course.

As a guide, full-time students should plan to undertake 8 courses per year and part-time students, who are in employment, a maximum of 6 courses per year, with a minimum of 4 courses per year. This is exclusive of any semester 3 enrolments.
